Monticello in Autumn - Landscape Photography by Josiah Friberg

Monticello is one of my favorite places in America because of both the neoclassical architecture and because of the picturesque setting upon a gorgeous mountain. It is a National Historic Landmark just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It was the estate of Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the United States Declaration of Independence, third President of the United States, and founder of the University of Virginia; it is also, at his direction, the site of Jefferson's burial place. I just love the surrounding trees, orchards, flower gardens, lawn and walkways, and the extensive vegetable garden. Of course, it is the person of Thomas Jefferson that I admire as one of the greatest Founding Fathers of our nation. I highly respect his views on liberty, self-government, God-given rights, and binding down the three branches of the federal government with the chains of the U.S. Constitution.

Here are two of my kids running around the wood pile enjoying being outdoors. This was going to just be a nice family photograph, but when I got it into the computer, I saw much more than what I expected. God is Love and Omniscient; therefore, let His Spirit be your compass to guide you through this earthly voyage we call "life".

I've always had a fascination with compasses. I learned how to use them in the boy scouts and when I first learned how to sail and navigate the Maine coast. This photograph speaks to me of keeping my eyes focused on the compass when out sailing, which is another way of saying, "Fixing my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of my faith..." Jesus guides me in this life by His Spirit that He has put inside of me. I seek not to be led by my own understanding, but rather, to be led by the Spirit of God, for this is how the sons of God are led in this life.

I am a sailor and have always loved sailboats, wind, the ocean, and rope. When I saw this dancing red jib sheet (rope) on the deck of a U.C.I. Shields, I decided to photograph it. It speaks to me of the fun us sailors have when we're out dancing with the wind. Every time we go out sailing, it's fun and it's a differently choreographed danced.

"Hope is the anchor of the soul."

I am a sailor and have always loved sailboats, wind, the ocean, and rope. My father first took me sailing when I was about 6 years old, and I can still remember the thrill of sailing in Quincy Harbor with him. I recently visited Newport Beach, CA, where I used to sail and race about 15 years ago. There's a special feeling every time I walk down onto the docks and see the sailboats and feel the wind blowing through my hair. When I saw this neatly coiled rope on the dock next to a Shields, I just knew I had to capture it with my camera. It speaks to me of having secure mourings in my life to keep me from drifting away from God and family and my purpose. It also speaks to me of the value of organization and neatness, which are so important on board a ship or sailboat, and are equally important in one's life.

Last week here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, we had our first ice storm this year. The night before was a long cold night of freezing rain, followed by the build up of ice on everything! Every tree, branch, twig, and blade of grass was covered with ice by morning. Weak trees and limbs were down everywhere. I had to go to work three hours later than normal because of the dangerous presence of "black ice" everywhere. Nevertheless, I took my camera with me and stopped all along the way photographing the beauty of the ice.

This was my son's first real experience with snow. He just stood there and stared in wonder and awe at the white stuff everywhere on the ground. This prophetic image can remind us all of the innocence of childhood fun and wonder in the face of winter snow.

There's something very inviting about a red door contrasted with white snow. This prophetic image reminds me of Jesus' words about standing at the door of my heart, knocking, and asking if He may come in. All I can say is: "Yes! Yes! Yes! Come in Lord Jesus and let's fellowship together. My heart is always open to You. My home is Your home. Let's sit down together, eat a good meal together, and share some precious and intimate time together." This photograph was taken in Boone, North Carolina.
